From the 1st February 2009, the amount of money that the Government is prepared to pay employees dismissed due to insolvency has increased to a maximum of £350 per week with the maximum redundancy claim of £10,500. Meanwhile the TUC have called for the limit to be raised to £500 per week to bring it into line with its real value when statutory redundancy was first introduced in 1965. Although the increase of £20 per week is welcome, TUC’s figure suggests that 46.2% of employees earn more than the statutory figure however with the number of redundancies on the increase and in the current economic climate with the Government looking to cut costs, it is doubtful that the TUC will get its wish and see a further increase in the Statutory figure.
